CMHCR offers a range of services and supports for students dealing with issues related to alcohol and drug use. These include consultation, assessment, counseling, referrals to treatment, and the collegiate recovery community (link). Our counselors use a harm-reduction approach that is focused on helping students to make healthier choices for themselves around issues of substance use.

Consultation:

Students who want to better understand their substance use or are curious about how their use may be affecting their health, academics, or relationships can meet with an AOD specialist for consultation. The student would first have to be a client of CMHCR to receive this service. To begin the process, contact us at 404-894-2575 or visit our office in the Smithgall Student Services Bldg, Ste 238.

Referrals:

CMHCR can also provide students with information and referrals about treatment and support services in the community. These include detoxification and treatment facilities, 12-step and other mutual support groups, and specialized off-campus counseling services.

Counseling:

Many alcohol and other drug use concerns can improve with appropriate evidence-based treatment and intervention. CMHCR offers a range of counseling services for students dealing with substance use concerns. These include individual and group counseling and may focus on the student’s direct usage or the impact of others’ use on the student.

Collegiate Recovery Program:

If you are currently in recovery from substance use and are seeking on-campus community and connection to support you on your journey, CMHCR’s Collegiate Recovery Program may be for you.

Mandated Assessment:

Students may also be required by the Office of Student Integrity (OSI) or Department of Housing and Residence Life (HRL) to complete an Alcohol and Other Drug assessment.  Here are the steps to complete the process:

  1. Contact Bob Day, LPC during business hours Monday through Friday for instruction on how to complete new client paperwork. You will need to pay an assessment fee of $50. Plan to spend about 30-60 minutes completing the initial forms and questionnaire. Once your paperwork is processed Mr. Day will contact you to schedule your appointment.
  2. Pay AOD Fee
  3. Attend the Alcohol and Other Drug Evaluation. This single 60-90 minute appointment is intended to be collaborative and non-judgmental, integrating assessment, discussion, and feedback. With support from an AOD counselor, students can explore patterns of their use, consider factors that may increase or reduce risk, and reflect on how substance use may intersect with academics, social life, and overall well being. The goal is to leave with practical strategies that reduce risk, support safety, inform decision-making, and encourage healthier choices that align with the student’s values and goals.
  4. At the completion of your assessment, your counselor may provide additional recommendations for support. These recommendations could include consulting self-help materials, accessing educational resources online or on-campus, or connecting with off-campus therapists, groups, or treatment facilities, depending on your needs. With your written permission, we will provide your referral source (OSI or HRL) with documentation confirming your attendance at these appointments, as well as noting any recommendations that may result from the assessment.

*Please note that CMHCR does not conduct assessments required by the court or any other outside agency.
